About the building

Built in 1936 by Béla MÁLNAI, a true pioneer of the Hungarian Bauhaus (also lived in this house) who worked together with Ödön LECHNER and Béla LAJTAI, this house is one of the true gems of Budapest's Bauhaus architecture.

Originally built for the Hungarian General Coal Mine Public Limited Company whose welfare spending had reached 28% of their profits by 1933. Jewish Jenő VIDA CEO of the company had a philanthropic sense, he recognized the connections between the quality of workers' welfare institutions and the increase in performance. The house was built for the management of the company on the most elegant and modern spot in Budapest at the '30s: the Danube Bank, next to Margaret Island and Szent István Park in the 13th district of Budapest, called Újlipótváros.

During World War II the company unsuccessfully tried to save its Jewish workers, even Jenő VIDA was deported to Auschwitz.

The house was completely renovated in 2019 according to the original design plans with the help of researchers and art historians.

The building was selected into the Budapest 100 program.

The apartment

The 103 square meters flat 's living room and bedroom have a view of St. Stephen's Park (Szent István Park) and the River Danube (Duna) with Margaret Island (Margitsziget) just in front of your eyes creating a glare atmosphere with a stunning and unique view.

The apartment has one bedroom with direct access to a wardrobe and the bathroom and the living room also faces the riverside. The dining room (hall) has an entrance to the bathroom too and the original four-leaf glass door makes the flat super bright.

Arriving home is a great experience thru the hallway facing the inner courtyard (with a statue) and the separate toilet opens from there. The kitchen is accessible via a real Bauhaus invention: a small premise functioning as an odor trap also having a door to the dining room.

The closet and a small office room opens from the kitchen both having enough light thru the huge windows.

Neighborhood

It's always in the details....

Choosing a place to live is a difficult thing to do and details are creating the whole picture.

The shine of the handrail, the original Bauhaus silver door handles, the marquetry on the bookshelf, the hundred years old chandeliers, the original Bieder and Art Deco chest of drawers, the old Petroff pianino transformed into a work table, the noble wood parquet floor, the black and white diagonal Bauhaus sytle tiles, or the stained glass of the bathroom created by the same team who worked in the Grasham Four Season's Hotel makes this apartment unique.
